HEVI-Metal Xtreme with Maggie Williams

“I grew up hunting the murky waters of Arkansas flooded timber. Many of my fondest and earliest hunting memories include winter mornings bundled up at 4-something in the morning while waiting on shooting light. This downtime consisted of telling jokes, petting dogs, and sipping coffee under the brightest stars imaginable. I would lay on the cold aluminum floor of my dad’s slough boat, wrapped up in oversized camouflage hand-me-downs, and eat shocking amounts of snack cakes and Snicker bars. While picking out the constellations through oak branches, I would learn many life lessons from my father and his hunting companions. My father has always been a methodical and intentional man. I loved nothing more than hearing his duck-hunting theories at the crack of dawn. Dad always had a sound reason behind all of his opinions, and he found joy in elaborating on them. I will never forget my father’s theory regarding shotgun shells, as he would often echo, “You can cheap out on a lot of things, but shotgun shells are not one of them. If I put in all this time and effort to go duck hunting, I expect success when I pull the trigger.” It was a rite of passage, as he always had good shotgun shells. I remember when HEVI-Metal first hit the market in 2010. I was as green as a drake mallard’s head, living out my youth hunting dreams. My dad got his hand on a few boxes and described them as “devastating and fatal.” I held those words close to my heart and never strayed from my old man’s expertise. To this day, I like to experiment and dabble with shells, exploring all that HEVI-Shot has to offer. But some things never change and I am my father’s daughter after all–I still love to shoot HEVI-Metal. My favorite load this year has been the HEVI-Metal Xtreme 20 gauge #4 Tungsten/ #1 Steel shot stack. It patterns flawlessly through my Franchi Affinity 3 and has been the most lethal duck load I have ever come across in 13 years. There is something to be said about the importance of quality shells. It’s more ethical to the game you're chasing and makes for much easier retrieves for my best friend, Kate. As much as I love to research shells, I don’t think I will be experimenting anymore, because I wholeheartedly believe there has never been a better duck load produced.
