Chasing Canadas in freshly cut cornfields is one of our favorite and most productive ways to hunt this time of year. A tactic that has increased our success over the years is to set up directly in standing corn that hasn’t been cut. Figuring out when the farmers are planning on harvesting is the first step in this equation. The second step would be to sweet-talk him into leaving a few extra rows standing so you and your buddies can tuck in and have a great hide. One of the benefits is that you’re using natural cover to your advantage so that you don’t have to rely on A-frames or layouts. Not only does this cut down on setup time, but it removes questionably brushed-in blinds from the picture, reducing your chances of birds flaring when in tight. The trick here is to set up two to three rows back from the field edge and break down the tops of the stalks behind you. This creates good overhead cover and breaks up your silhouette so that when birds are circling, you don’t get picked out.
Utilizing silhouette decoys also adds to the convenience of the setup. Silos are extremely packable, and you can get away with hunting over a few bags so that you can ditch the decoy trailer. Our shell of choice for our 12 Gauge Browning Maxus II Wicked Wing is the 3” Hevi-Metal Longer Range in BB. These shells have increased downrange energy thanks to high-density HEVI-Bismuth alloy pellets layered over corrosion-resistant steel shot, resulting in cleaner, more consistent kills.
With a stiff wind, some good calling, a convincing spread, and a few boxes of Hevi-Shot, you are setting yourself up for a successful hunt in the corn.
