Post Season Shotgun Maintenance: What Every Hunter Should Know

Once hunting season wraps up, it’s tempting to stow away your shotgun and forget about it until next year. But skipping post-season maintenance can lead to corrosion, misfires, or costly repairs down the road. A few simple steps now will protect your investment and ensure your firearm is ready for when the next flock sets in.

Start with a complete inspection. Check the shotgun for any signs of wear, rust, or damage. Pay special attention to the action, barrel, and stock. If you used your firearm in wet, cold, or muddy conditions, hidden moisture and grime could be present inside.

Disassemble and clean thoroughly. Remove the barrel, forend, and bolt or action components (as appropriate to your model). Use a bore brush and solvent to scrub out carbon buildup and residue from the barrel. Wipe down all metal parts with a clean cloth and apply a light coat of gun oil to prevent rust.

Clean the stock and exterior. Wooden stocks may need a wipe with a wood-safe oil, while synthetic stocks can be cleaned with a damp cloth. Remove any caked-on mud or debris.

Check and lubricate moving parts. Lightly oil the action, trigger group, and any moving parts -but avoid over-lubricating, as excess oil can attract dirt and cause buildup over time.

Store your shotgun properly. Store in a cool, dry place with a dehumidifier or desiccant pack nearby. Use a gun sock or case for added protection, and never store it long-term inside a soft case, which can trap moisture.

By giving your shotgun a little care now, you’re extending its life and ensuring it runs smoothly and safely next season.
